Ancient Traditions: Imbolc
Groundhog Day marks the half-way point between Winter and Spring. From ancient traditions we can embrace this symbolic time as an energetic stirring of the seeds we are planting for spring. Our ideas, dreams, goals, and visions are on their way and soon we will be preparing the soil for their imminent appearance.
How we feel at this time can start the inquiry into what preparations we can make for the spring, when our “seeds” will start to grow, with some attention and nurturing. This is not a time to put your dreams on hold. They call us to our life’s journey because adventures, tailor-made just for us, are waiting. But we must do more than listen. We must take a step forward.
The Groundhog & HIs Shadow
The hibernating groundhog, cozy in his sleeping quarters, likely prefers staying asleep rather than being poked and prodded to look at his shadow. Life does this to us sometimes, too. We enjoy our slumbering routines that feel comfortable, but life pokes us awake with circumstances we cannot control. Even with our grumpy demeanor, we must look at our shadow.
Perhaps you have a to-do list to keep you motivated, standing appointments, and quarterly goals personally and professionally. Others call you successful, and you may even recognize it, too. Yet, deep within, a niggling feeling persists—now what? Is there more? Am I truly happy? And if I am not truly happy, then what does that say about all the energy and sacrifices for this success?
Do you wake up lethargic, mentally and physically drained?
You want to feel playful, invigorated and excited about life today while perhaps feeling guilty about wanting something different than your current responsibilities. The gap between the passion you want to feel and the reality of your exhaustion can feel discouraging or even overwhelming, so you just keep with the familiar routine.
These feelings are the seeds stirring beneath the earth. They can grow and blossom into something beautiful if you give it attention and commit to nurturing the process.
What might that be? Do you believe it is possible? What would it take for you to believe?
Groundhog Day: The Movie
The Groundhog Day movie featuring Bill Murray provides the perfect story of how we have a choice, in every moment, to begin again. We can take the routine parts of our day and choose to view them with a new perspective. Then, a light appears, and with this new perspective, the dull routine fades away. The choice is ours. A small or simple decision can begin a ripple effect into infinite possibilities.
What choice can you make today, to stir those seeds of desire?
